Saxophonist Jeff Kashiwa Performs Benefit Concert Fundraiser Supports Long Beach Area Nonprofit Youth Jazz Program

World-famous saxophonist Jeff Kashiwa will perform Saturday, Sept. 24, at a concert to benefit the Jazz Angels, a Long Beach-based nonprofit jazz education program for young musicians ages 11-17.

The event, Boplicity 2011, will take place on the campus of Cal State Long Beach at the Gerald Daniel Recital Hall. The concert begins at 6:45 p.m.

Grammy-nominated Kashiwa, a Smooth Jazz artist known for his stirring sax solos and popular compositions, is expected to perform works from his six CDs that span a professional career of more than 20 years. The concert is an opportunity to hear the Seattle native — one of the most in-demand jazz musicians and a member of The Rippingtons featured at the Montreux and North Sea jazz festivals — perform at his alma mater. His current projects include touring with his most recent band, the Sax Pack, a collaboration of Kashiwa and fellow signature sax players Steve Cole and Kim Waters.

“Jeff Kashiwa is one of the brightest stars on the contemporary jazz scene,” said Barry Cogert, Executive Director of the Jazz Angels. “This event is a chance to enjoy the artistry of an A-list musician while supporting a program that immerses kids in jazz and promotes the self-confidence and leadership skills characteristic of this uniquely American musical art form.”

At Boplicity 2011, Kashiwa will perform with an all-star band made up of fellow friends of the Jazz Angels. The group includes Albert Alva (saxophone), Tom Bevan (guitar), Karen Hammick (piano), Rosy Rosenquist (drums), Mark Barnes (keyboards) and Cogert (bass).

In addition to live jazz, Boplicity 2011 will feature an auction and dessert. Tickets are $25.

A VIP reception with Kashiwa will precede the concert. Tickets are $50 and include hors d’oeuvres, wine and soft drinks, and preferred concert seating. The reception begins at 5:30 p.m.

Ruwanga Samath founded The Bird Call Productions in 2003 at age 18. Since then, Samath has completed production for major artists such as Beyonce, Britney Spears, Kelly Rowland, Flo Rida, Ke$ha, Norah Jones, The Virgins, and more.

During the 2008 presidential campaign, The Bird Call Productions put together the song “Make it to the Sun” for Barack Obama’s presidential campaign. The song, urging voters to use their vote to make a change, received widespread recognition throughout the campaign.

Raspin was born outside of Chicago, IL, and currently lives in the Hollywood Hills and has been living in the Los Angeles area for over 30 years. Raspin is a self-taught guitarist who has mastered the rhythm guitar. Shortly after his arrival in Los Angeles, he was signed by Marv Bornstein, A & M Records. “Hold On” was the first song to be placed, by Canadian artist, Richard Step, off his “Holiday in Hollywood” album, which was arranged by Grammy Award winner Jimmie Haskell. His musicial influences come from such great artists as: Louis Armstrong, Joni Mitchell, Harry Chapin, Cat Stevens, Dan Fogelberg, Bruce Springsteen, Bette Midler, Patty La Belle and Beethoven.

Raspin is a well-rounded, accomplished songwriter, vocalist and producer. His credits include: The opening track on the EAT’M Compilation disc, vocalist for the Wonder Years television series (“Catch The Wind” by Donavon and “Here Comes The Sun” by the Beatles), songwriter, lead vocal and producer of “Busy Sidewalks” for NBC’s Mark and Brian’s television series, and was the vocalist on “Bye, Bye Time”, a track submitted for, “Muppets In Space”. Raspin is the lead vocalist creating the voice-over character for K.C. Edgar, the movie villain. “Bye, Bye Time” was written and produced by Angela Lupino and Grammy Award winner Simon Franglen, producer and engineer of “My Heart Will Go On” (the love theme from the movie “Titanic” – Celine Dion) and most recently, “Avatar”. Raspin has represented such artists as Al Kasha, writer of “The Morning After”, and the legendary artist Richie Havens for movies and films. He also produced C.C.H. Pounder’s spoken word CD, “Smoke”, which actually made it to the ballot for a spoken-word Grammy.

Raspin has worked with such greats as David Frost, Richie Havens, Jane Fonda, David Holman (engineered all of the early hits for Olivia Newton-John), Larry Kuppin and Harry Sloane, owners of New World Pictures, Simon Franlen, C.C.H. Pounder and The Williams Brothers. He has performed at some of the most prestigious clubs, to include: B.B. King’s Blues Club, Universal City and City Walk, CA, The Troubadour, Hollywood, CA, My Place, Santa Monica, CA, The Earl of Old Town, Chicago, IL and Orphans, Chicago, IL, to name a few.

Robin Keeble

This week our guest is Robin Keeble. Swoop met Robin last year and found Robin to have one of the most remarkable life stories of overcoming a life that some may have witnessed and written off as worthless; A life that many have lived and written themselves off as worthless. Not Robin, she persevered.

Robin was a drug addict who prostituted herself or committed burglaries for money to buy heroin. Her habit kept her in and out of jail for 22 years.

In 1996 she was released from prison and homeless. She was in La Palma Park in Anaheim, sharing needles with other homeless junkies when an AIDS Outreach Project worker approached her and asked if she was hungry and if she had a safe place to sleep. He offered her a free HIV test, food vouchers and help getting into a drug rehabilitation program.

Since that time Robin has become sober, earned her Associate’s Degree in 2002, followed by a Bachelors Degree in Human Services in 2005 and Master’s in Public Health from Cal State Fullerton in 2008. Along the way she’s received recognition, awards and garnered the admiration of the faculty of various institutions.

Robin is the director of the AKA Angels; A women’s civic group that meets quarterly in support of women that have been released from incarceration. The goal of the AKA Angels is to offer support during transition and community integration. She is also involved with Community Advisory Representatives; a peer based mentoring group for those incarcerated in the Orange County Jail system.

This doesn’t begin to tell the wonderful story of Robin Keeble, the road she’s traveled and the work she does. Tune in and learn more about this beautiful soul who says “…If you believe you deserve a better life, you can make it happen.”

The Long Beach Coalition for Good Jobs and a Healthy Community is a coalition comprised of local residents, students, teachers, workers, faith-based leaders, and community-based organizations coming together to address poverty and the growing socio-economic inequality within our community.

The Long Beach Coalition’s mission is to address the growing inequality and poverty in Long Beach by promoting living wages, responsible development, affordable housing and healthy communities. The Coalition engages in grassroots leadership development, political advocacy, civic participation, and public education to make a more livable Long Beach for everyone.

The Coalition has teamed up with other great organizations to build an alliance between LGBTQ & Labor communities to put on a forum that will include a discussion to understand the shared discrimination faced in our communities and also engage in a process of strategizing and using collective action to break down stereotypes and win justice in within the communities.

On Wednesday August 25 at 9pm (PST) it’s going to be another great episode of The Buzz with Ray Pok! This week Swoop, Peter, and Ray take on the medical marijuana debate.

With the abundance of medical marijuana dispensaries popping up throughout various cities and counties we decided to delve into the dilemma politicians are facing and sometimes-hypocritical debates that take place.

We all have heard and seen the stories of city governments licensing and allowing the dispensaries to open, only to vote a year or so later to close most of them down, and highly taxing those that are allowed to remain open.

It seems that some cities have decided to accept the fact that these businesses are medical facilities but for the purpose of hopefully charging the owners and potential owners exorbitant application and licensing fees in an effort to help create quick revenue and potentially solve budget deficits.

In the wake of the recent BP oil disaster, rock-and-roll icon Grace Slick and Los Angeles songwriter Michelle Mangione have joined forces on a new song released this week that brings together musicians from across the US to raise money for aid to Louisiana. The GRAMMY Museum has partnered with the artists, lending its support for the track, The Edge of Madness, in order to benefit fishermen and musicians in the areas hardest hit by the disaster.

Tune in Thursday morning @ 9am (PST) as Grace Slick and Michelle Mangione join Swoop’s World to discuss The Edge of Madness, the inspiration behind the song, and what can be done to help the people of Louisiana. Those are some of the things we know we’ll talk about, but of course with this line up who knows where it all will lead.

We will host a collection center during First Fridays Long Beach at the Michelle Mangione show in the Mirage Mediterranean Grill. Anyone wishing to give a gift of an Easter Basket and help in the efforts to donate 1,500 completed, essential-filled Easter baskets for under-served Long Beach-area youth may drop them off during the show. All baskets collected will be delivered to Justin Rudd for Operation Easter Basket.

The Mirage Mediterranean Grill is located at 539 East Bixby Road (at Atlantic Ave), Long Beach, 90807.

We are teaming up with LB Food Review, a couple of light-hearted critics intent on eating their way through the best restaurants of Long Beach. Together we will produce bi-monthly segments about the local restaurant and bar scene that will air exclusively on Swoop’s World.

Talk show hosts Swoop Lewis and Peter Dopulos announced the partnership with Taylor Nelson and Chris Livingston, saying that the first LB Food Review spot on Swoop’s World will launch Wednesday, March 31.

“It just seems like the perfect mix,” said Swoop host of the show. “We were already looking to incorporate a lifestyle focus to our show. Taylor and Chris are already out there doing something really cool in the community.”

Co-host Peter agreed, adding, “When we met the guys I knew we would do something together, we are all out there trying to do the same thing—spread the word about Long Beach—and we all had this good vibe going on.”

The addition of the LB Food Review segment will fit right in with the already wide range of topics Swoop’s World tackles weekly. Past shows have included interviews with political candidates and community leaders, artists, musicians, and others.

When asked about the new partnership, Chris said, “It’s just a natural fit. Swoop’s World and LB Food Review both aim to spread the word and support the local businesses of the city of Long Beach.  I’m amazed we didn’t run into each other sooner.”

“We are very excited to bring our focus on Long Beach’s food culture to the Swoop’s World listeners,” Taylor stated. “The art and live music scene of Long Beach is so intertwined with the bars and restaurants of the city that we feel we have a lot to contribute.”

Peter and Swoop Broadcasting live from First Friday’s Long Beach

On Friday March 5th we took our Long Beach Radio show out of the studio and back on the road for a live broadcast from First Friday’s Long Beach in Bixby Knolls. This was our second time broadcasting from First Friday’s. In February we had a great time doing the show from Nino’s Italian Restaurant.  This Month we headed over to the Michelle Mangione, Singers and Songwriters event at the Mirage Cafe in Bixby Knolls.

There was a lot of energy in the room as musician Kern Richards and his band got the audience pumped up for a night of great music and fun interviews.  Swoop and Peter brought an energetic vibe to the lounge area and were able to interview both Mangione and Richards during a break in the action. Many of the guests that arrived to enjoy in the music also sat down at the mic and shot the breeze with the radio hosts.
