BlackDogHat came together through the urge to create. Although from London and Athens and with different cultural backgrounds, they had common ground, that of story telling through words, sounds and images. Their music does this and each song paints a picture from soft melodies to rocky ballads. One half of the band, John Sage is Essex born-and-bred. The other half, Matt Gkikas is Greek… and a seaside childhood is one more thing they have in common.

The band formed in September 2007 when the two realised that their common passion for music, their background in bands and musical theatre and their similar outlook on the creative process could lead them to something worth pursuing and sharing with as many people as possible. Their style of music is edgy, haunting, melodic with dark undertones, punchy and different.

Second Annual Rose Park Bluegrass Festival
The Second Annual Rose Park Bluegrass Festival will once again bring all-American music, activities, food, and summer fun to the iconic Long Beach neighborhood on Sunday, August 19th from 12 until 5pm.

The free festival, to be held in the roundabout park at East Eighth St. and Orizaba, will feature Bluegrass music acts, and variety entertainment on stage, great food from Long Beach’s best eateries, and all ages activities throughout the park that are sure to amuse you and yours.

In keeping with tradition…. Four special Rose Park residents will be recognized on stage during the awarding of the “Distinguished Roses” designation. Go to www.RPNA.org to nominate someone you know.

This neighborhood event is a collaboration between GDH Events Inc. and the Rose Park Neighborhood Association, with support from The Office of Vice Mayor Suja Lowenthal, The Long Beach Department of Parks and Recreation, and the Long Beach office of Special Events and Filming.

Thomas Hornig

Thomas Hornig
Thomas has been writing songs since the age of 12. Throughout the years he’s always worked on a balance between writing music and performing as a musician.

After backing up other artists for most of his life he decided it was time to be the front man. In 2007 he wrote, recorded, produced, performed and mixed his first solo album “All Of My Life.” The album was released in February 2008 under his own label and has been performing his songs around town.

“Now, I’m very excited about the release of my second album “Every Single Day.” I had a little more help from some amazing friends such as Jamila Ford, Dave Pearlman, Jennifer Quiroz, Ronan Chris Murphy and Stephanie Villa and I am sure you’ll love it.” said Thomas.

Thomas has had his songs used in Film and TV, been awarded the 2008 and 2009 ASCAPlus Pop Award, and his song “Everything Else Came Through” received honorable mention for the 2011 Billboard International Songwriting Competition.

He’s currently spending more and more time producing and mixing for fellow songwriters and still loves to backup artists as a drummer.

Hart Getzen

While there’s no shortage of videogames on the market today, there are very few original novels written specifically for the gamer audience. Aimed at this elusive audience of young male tween and teen readers – and anyone who is familiar with the dynamic and often combative world of online gaming – Echo’s Revenge features a technological creature who has somehow managed to escape its digital origins and manifest itself in the real world.

The brainchild of writer Hart Getzen, the Echo’s Revenge series and website (echohunt.com) are presented under the name Sean Austin, a videogame programmer who is documenting the path of destruction wrought by this virtual shape-shifting monster. The Ultimate Game is the first novel in a series, told from the point of view of young Reggie (14) and Jeremy (11), two brothers who are master gamers in the world of ECHO, a heartless, indestructible, renegade virtual creation. Unfortunately, ECHO’s not the only monster in their life – they also face the unpredictable behavior of their mother’s explosive boyfriend. When life at home gets too rough, the boys decide to run away. Little do they know that the latest iteration of ECHO has escaped the game, and is targeting gamers as part of a nefarious real-life scheme. Parts II and III of the series will be published in 2013 and 2014, with plans to turn ECHO into an actual online combat-style role-playing game.

Getzen, who grew up on the streets of Kabul, is an entertainment professional with a background in both action films and simulation gaming. Behind his action-packed young adult novel is a serious attempt to educate the reader into the STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) frameworks that are likely to shape the world of tomorrow. “The goal was also to get these young gamers into thinking about what goes into building and playing a game – what happens when a group of people get together to create or experience something, and imbue it with their own spirit. What are the political and interpersonal dynamics of that team enterprise?” Forced to rely not only on their gaming skills, but their loyalty, intelligence, and ability to work together, Reggie and Jeremy find that they are more prepared to take on the dangers of the adult world than they realize.

Whiteboy Slim

Maurice Richard Libby aka Whiteboy Slim is a musician and visual artist. He takes a consistent approach to his work in both media, mixing and matching his tools on tried-and-tested structures. Musically, he draws on experience and a diverse set of influences, including jazz, funk, world music and hip-hop, to create a very personal, coherent and enduring blues sound.

Ray Charles and Louis Armstrong sparked Maurice’s interest in music and in ‘blue’ sounds. He started to experiment with a number of instruments as a child and was soon winning awards with his first band.

Still in his teens, Maurice sang and played harmonica in the blues group Red Meat, which featured his brother Michael on Drums and Ray Montana, the Regina guitarist who went on to back up Sawyer Brown, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Waylon Jennings and Johnny Paycheck.

After moving to Toronto, Maurice took on the persona of Whiteboy Slim. His driving blues outfit, Automatic Slim, was a popular live attraction, filling classic venues like the El Mocambo, The Silver Dollar Saloon, and the Black Swan. Automatic Slim was the house band at four different clubs on different nights of the week, and was noted for having best grossing Wednesday night downstairs at the El Mocambo. Maurice shared the stage during this period with other key Canadian blues artists, such as the brilliant guitarist and harmonica player, Michael Picket, and the Kendall-Wall Blues band.

When personnel changes eventually shut down Automatic Slim, Maurice embarked on a solo career, playing jazz in Toronto clubs, then returning to Saskatchewan, where he plays his blues solo and in various group formations.

Maurice learned his craft in impressive company. While reading Jazz and Composition at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, he hung out with fellow students and teachers including jazz great Gary Burton, pianist Al Copley (co-founder of Roomful of Blues), and bassist Ron McClure (bassist with Charles Lloyd, Wynton Kelly, Quest, The 4th Way, Joe Henderson, Blood, Sweat & Tears, The Pointer Sisters, Sarah Vaughan, Thelonious Monk).

Angela Williamson is writer, teacher, businesswoman, and mother with a daughter who is healing from autism. She wrote her first book Effective Treatments and Solutions for the Autistic Population to help parents and professional seek alternative methods for treating their child or client with autism. Ms. Williamson has over 15 years of professional experience in working with the autism population. She also wants to dispel the myth that teenagers or adults with autism can’t learn and to disregard outdated theories that don’t work. Ms. Williamson discusses the probable causes of autism and emphasizes that autism is not something that just happens. You can heal autism, despite what the medical community is saying to parents. She has dedicated her book to all individuals with autism.

The Heart Pills
Fearing the end of the world, in 1999 a group of pregnant women headed into the woods in search of a savior and found only angry animals. Upon giving birth, they all perished for lack of medical resources — except one. Not knowing how to care for the rest of the babies, she decided to dress them up like animals and hope for the best as she tramped away into the fog. Two bears that had recently been released from captivity came upon the orphans and raised them as their own for twelve years. Finally, the surviving mother located the orphans and returned them to civilization. Knowing no god, these strange new people search for anything to satisfy their internal iambic idol, constantly bobbing their heads to their own pulse. They revel in their own excesses, in an attempt to find an answer, a cure, a heart pill.

Michelle Danner

Michelle Danner, Artistic Director at Edgemar Center of the Arts and one of the most successful acting coaches in Hollywood, is currently directing the film version of John Buffalo Mailer’s “Hello Herman” starring Norman Reedus, Martha Higareda and newcomer Garrett Backstrom. The film, an unflinching examination of today’s society through the eyes of a young copycat killer and the journalist who sees the tragedy as a potential boost for his own career, is an adaptation of the play of the same name, also written by Norman Mailer’s youngest son.

“’Hello Herman’ is the story of a teenager who, out of confusion and rage, carries out a high school shooting that mirrors the tragedy of Columbine,” says Danner. ” Certain members of the media only heighten the tragedy by sensationalizing it and setting out to televise his execution.”

“This is a story of prejudice and isolation,” she continues, “as well as the racism, bullying and violence that our youth encounter in schools that has the potential to lead to these high school tragedies. As the mother of an 8-year-old boy, the themes resonate with me.

“When we staged the screenplay at Edgemar last spring, Steven Spielberg, Oliver Stone, Paul Haggis and others came and were moved by the material and we knew we had to make this film,” added Danner.

This timely and disturbing film offers no answers, but, Danner hopes, may spark a much-needed dialogue between our nation’s youth and their peers, parents and teachers.

As acting coach, Danner works with many A-list actors both privately and on the set, including Gerard Butler, Chris Rock, Penelope Cruz, James Franco, Salma Hayek, Christian Slater, Zooey Deschanel, Isla Fisher and Marcia Cross among others.

She was featured coaching Andy Richter on “The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien” in 2009 and is currently writing two books on acting, “The Golden Box” and “100 Most Asked Questions About Acting.” In 2000, Danner and acting coach Larry Moss raised $1.5 million from donors including Steven Speilberg, Tom Hanks, Kate Capshaw and Neil Simon to build and open the Edgemar Center which houses two theatres and an art gallery.

Tanna Frederick

On Thursday, April 5, 2012, at 12pm/PST on Swoop’s World Primetime we’re happy to have actress Tanna Frederick return and will fill us in on all of her recent accolades and projects, including her new play “Why We Have A Body” which is her directorial debut. Tanna Frederick recently made her directorial debut with “Why We Have A Body” and portrays Mary. A critically praised audience favorite, Ms. Frederick recently concluded a record-breaking long run starring at Edgemar Center in the title role of A.R. Gurney’s “Sylvia” and, a year earlier, in Henry Jaglom’s “Just 45 Minutes From Broadway.” Her Edgemar debut, a year before that, was in Jaglom’s “Always….But Not Forever.” She previously appeared in Robey Theatre Company’s “For The Love Of Freedom: Toussaint” and, at the Skylight Theatre, in “A Safe Place.” Her extraordinary film career includes starring roles in “Hollywood Dreams,” “Irene in Time,” “Queen of the Lot” and the upcoming “Just 45 Minutes From Broadway,” opposite Judd Nelson, due for theatrical release this summer. She has just completed filming principal photography on “The M Word,” co-starring with Michael Imperioli and Corey Feldman. She is also the founder of Project Save Our Surf, as well as the prestigious Iowa Independent Film Festival.

Tanna recently starred as a dog in the title role in “Sylvia” at the Edgemar Center, and received accolades for her work. “Frederick is nothing short of terrific…Four paws up!” said Jose Ruiz of ReviewPlays.com

Frederick can be seen on the big screen starring opposite Noah Wyle in Henry Jaglom’s romantic comedy “Queen of the Lot.” She stars as Maggie Chase, as actress desperate to claw her way off the B-list of action films into major movie stardom.

Betty Jo Tucker of ReelReviews.com says of the chemistry between Frederick and Wyle, “their ‘opposites attract’ banter reminds me of old-time movie couples like Tracy and Hepburn. And their onscreen chemistry is undeniable.” Frederick won Best Actress at the Wild Rose Independent Film Festival for her role.

Fireside with Phil and Tony

Fireside with Phil and Tony is an awesome acoustic project to go see. Loud enough to party to and at the same time you can still chat with your friends at the table. They are a MUST SEE!!! You WON’T be disappointed. Phil and Tony have been together in other ‘full’ bands, and decided to form an acoustic project in November of 2008. Origanally the idea was a side project. By January of 2009, the project was their main focus. New songs are constantly added to keep their set list fresh. To date, no 2 shows have been exactly the same … On October 10th. 2011, they released their first Cd/Ep “Shoot the Moon”. All the songs on the CD are as you would hear them live.

Phil Boyer – Vocals
Phil received a drum set at age 5 from his father. Once he ‘destroyed’ the set playing to KISS’ Destroyer album, he moved on to singing. He sang in choir around age 10. Phil enjoys playing both original and cover music. His influences are Robert Plant, Andrew Wood, and Axl Rose.

Tony Hubbard -Guitar
Tony got his first guitar around age 8 from his grandfather.He played off and on until the early 90′s. He has switched to primarily acoustic with Fireside. His influences are Angus Young, Jimmy Page, and Jerry Cantrell.

Sina Amedson

“I’m chasing thee elusive dream that so many other delusional people before me come to this town to pursue. I’m excited at the change of scenery and the new start it’s given me. Even if none of this stuff makes it off the ground I’m happy to have made it this far.” ~ Sina

Sina began producing his own stand up comedy shows in various bars and rock venues in 2005 around Salt Lake City. Creating what he has coined “The Underground Comedy Movement” of Salt Lake City (aka U.C.M. S.L.C.) where he has drawn, with no budget, acts such as Lewis Black, Doug Stanhope, Ron Shock, Sean Rouse, Auggie Smith, Neil Hamburger, ‘Pleaseeasaur’, Andy Andrist, Martha Kelly, Tig Notaro and Steve Agee, plus many more.

He has been a working stand-up comedian since May, 2003. After progressing very quickly, he was awarded second place in the Utah Amateur Comedy Competition in October, 2003, at Wiseguys Comedy Cafe. He also earned 3rd place in the 2008 Rocky Mountain Laugh Off, the largest invitation-only comedy competition in the region, and was a finalist in the long-running Uncle Clyde’s Comedy Competition at Flapper’s Comedy Club in Burbank, California in 2011.

Miu

Raspin

Raspin is a self-taught guitarist who has mastered the rhythm guitar. Shortly after his arrival in Los Angeles, he was signed by Marv Bornstein, A & M Records. “Hold On” was the first song to be placed, by Canadian artist, Richard Step, off his “Holiday in Hollywood” album, which was arranged by Grammy Award winner Jimmie Haskell. His musical influences come from such great artists as: Louis Armstrong, Joni Mitchell, Harry Chapin, Cat Stevens, Dan Fogelberg, Bruce Springsteen, Bette Midler, Patty La Belle and Beethoven.

Raspin, an eclectic song stylist who, on his CD “We Do What We Do”, takes so many approaches in his song writing that critics have said, “his songs place a premium on intelligent lyricism, demonstrating a clear and almost writerly (as in print) sensitivity- an all original catalog that bears an eye opening, ear opening blend of influences.” The songs are perfectly suited to such environments as Los Angeles and New York, reflecting diverse cross-cultural song writing and performing-having a life outside of what could be contemporary. Acoustic folk pop, jazz, R & B, even sprinkled with a touch of gospel–it’s all in the music and is created out of a spontaneous energy that is very much Rapin’s stylized original vocal and performances trademark.

“We Do What We Do” is a collection of lustful, political and often daring songs that seems to emerge from deep within Raspin’s soul. Raspin boldly projects his ideas and sounds as his hypnotic and haunting voice carries over his hummable melodies and occasional key changes in a sublime balance that few musicians achieve, yet constantly strive for. Critics have noted that he has a style all his own in a singing range that’s wide and varied. He is truly an eclectic artist who resides at that intimate place where the harmony of sound and the words mingle in meaning. That’s why Raspin’s adult contemporary music with an offbeat twist is appealing and has an impact on listeners.

Randi Navarrete aka Pir8t

Randi Navarrete
Randi Navarrete grew up all over California (Southern and Northern) and even spent 9 months in Utah during the 5th grade. By the time she graduated from high school she had attended 9 schools.

Navarrete worked many jobs prior to becoming a high school teacher, including managing a music store, a summer as a carnie, and she also worked as a loan processor.

She met her husband while engaged to someone else and when her other relationship didn’t work out they became close friends and started dating. He convinced her to go back to school and she subsequently earned her BA in Art from Cal State Fullerton.

Randi eventually moved to Michigan after her husband landed a job in East Lansing. Unfortunately teaching jobs for her were not to be found. “Bad economy and smaller schools played a part…I began making jewelry during my unemployment in MI. and opened a shop on Etsy.”

Navarrete currently resides in Long Beach and teaches high school in Compton, CA. She enjoys creating for her Etsy shop, using social media, and teaching.

Robin Keeble

Robin was a drug addict who prostituted herself or committed burglaries for money to buy heroin. Her habit kept her in and out of jail for 22 years.

In 1996 she was released from prison and homeless. She was in La Palma Park in Anaheim, sharing needles with other homeless junkies when an AIDS Outreach Project worker approached her and asked if she was hungry and if she had a safe place to sleep. He offered her a free HIV test, food vouchers, and help getting into a drug rehabilitation program.

Since that time Robin has become sober, earned her Associate’s Degree in 2002, followed by a Bachelors Degree in Human Services in 2005 and Master’s in Public Health from Cal State Fullerton in 2008. Along the way she’s received recognition, awards and garnered the admiration of the faculty of various institutions.

Robin is the director of the AKA Angels; A women’s civic group that meets quarterly in support of women that have been released from incarceration. The goal of the AKA Angels is to offer support during transition and community integration. She is also involved with Community Advisory Representatives; a peer based mentoring group for those incarcerated in the Orange County Jail system.

A steady childhood diet of Burt Bacharach, The Beach Boys, and Motown has given Normandie’s music a distinctly 60’s pop throw-back, and her songs showcase these influences with style. Normandie was an accompanist for many years, playing classic show tunes by the likes of Cole Porter and Kander & Ebb, and these jazzy rhythms and lyrics have made their way into her work as well.

Normandie is currently finishing up the recording of her fifth full-length studio album, Geography And Other Problems, slated to be released this month.

Normandie Wilson continues to make her own path as a singer, composer, painter, and woman. She will be touring the United States, France, United Kingdom, Germany, and Sweden in support of Geography And Other Problems later this year.

Aric Davis

Aric Davis has worked as a body piercer for the past fifteen years and used his extensive knowledge of the industry to create the world in A Good And Useful Hurt. When he’s not writing, he’s helping spread the word about local bands, cheering for his favorite hockey team or scouring amusement parks for new thrill-ride roller coasters. He likes weather cold enough to need a sweatshirt but not a coat, and friends who wear their hearts on their sleeves. His first novel, Nickel Plated, was published in March 2010 and received rave reviews from critics. A Good And Useful Hurt is his second novel. Aric Davis lives in Grand Rapids, Michigan with his wife and daughter.

The EnableRs (formerly known as The Dregs of Pele) are a dynamic Rock/Alternative band sprung from the San Fernando Valley. Amazing song stylings and vocals of singer/songwriter “Lo” Laura Apoliona and guitar player and songwriter, Scott Jones, drive the band.

Lo, who has been singing since she was four years old, has written extraordinary melodies such as “A Drinking Song” and “The Prisoner’s Wife” on her debut “Lo” released in 2004. She studied in classical voice, and she spent the majority of the 1990’s fronting rock bands Fine Rum Punch and Zen Belt in most major venues on the Sunset Strip and a smattering of dives throughout Hollywood, honing her craft and exposing her edges.

Scott started his musical career playing lead guitar and singing in several rock bands that played almost everywhere in L.A. from the nearest local dive to the Bonaventure Hotel. His classically influenced, fiery, and tasteful style has been compared to Page and Clapton which goes hand in hand with his magnetic stage presence and Plant peppered voice.

Recovering from the business of music, both had independently taken a “break” from the music scene only to meet in the summer of 2010. Sharing the stories of bands and songs loved and lost led them to an impromptu jam in a strip mall stairwell. After wailing their now signature cover, “Babe, I’m Gonna Leave You”, The EnableRs were born. Scott’s sweetly demented chord structures and strategic bold riffs with Lo’s haunting and powerful voice and disturbing prose are this band’s apocalyptic vulnerability and melodic strength.

I AM now “That” girl that chose to stop the cycle, who decides my own fate by making all the choices in my life, choosing to live life instead of being a victim of it. Each time I was faced with a negative situation I made a commitment to myself to not ever live like that when it became my choice, taking all challenges and turning them into motivation and purpose.

Kid Gramophone is an indie rock band from the Inland Empire. What do they sound like? Summer, Saturday night, highways and pool parties.

Tanna Frederick

Tanna Frederick makes her directorial debut with “Why We Have A Body” and portrays Mary. A critically praised audience favorite, Ms. Frederick recently concluded a record-breaking long run starring at Edgemar Center in the title role of A.R. Gurney’s “Sylvia” and, a year earlier, in Henry Jaglom’s “Just 45 Minutes From Broadway.” Her Edgemar debut, a year before that, was in Jaglom’s “Always….But Not Forever.” She previously appeared in Robey Theatre Company’s “For The Love Of Freedom: Toussaint” and, at the Skylight Theatre, in “A Safe Place.” Her extraordinary film career includes starring roles in “Hollywood Dreams,” “Irene in Time,” “Queen of the Lot” and the upcoming “Just 45 Minutes From Broadway,” opposite Judd Nelson, due for theatrical release this summer. She has just completed filming principal photography on “The M Word,” co-starring with Michael Imperioli and Corey Feldman. She is also the founder of Project Save Our Surf, as well as the prestigious Iowa Independent Film Festival.

Tanna recently starred as a dog in the title role in “Sylvia” at the Edgemar Center, and received accolades for her work. “Frederick is nothing short of terrific…Four paws up!” said Jose Ruiz of ReviewPlays.com

Frederick can be seen on the big screen starring opposite Noah Wyle in Henry Jaglom’s romantic comedy “Queen of the Lot.” She stars as Maggie Chase, as actress desperate to claw her way off the B-list of action films into major movie stardom.

Betty Jo Tucker of ReelReviews.com says of the chemistry between Frederick and Wyle, “their ‘opposites attract’ banter reminds me of old-time movie couples like Tracy and Hepburn. And their onscreen chemistry is undeniable.” Frederick won Best Actress at the Wild Rose Independent Film Festival for her role.

Joe Butler was in the Air Force when he met Steve and Skip Boone and formed the Kingsmen, one of the top bands in Eastern Long Island in the early 1960′s. After leaving the service in 1963, Joe headed straight for Greenwich Village where he began singing in clubs and recorded sides for a solo album on Mercury Records. Producer Eric Jacobson suggested that Joe and Steve Boone hook up with John Sebastian and Zal Vanovsky, and the Lovin’ Spoonful was born.

The Spoonful became one of the most popular and influential American bands of the ’60′s, creating more than a half dozen albums as well as soundtrack music for the debut films of Woody Allen (“What’s Up, Tiger Lily?,” 1966) and Francis Ford Coppola (“You’re a Big Boy Now,”1967.) In 1968, John Sebastian left the group. Joe, Steve and Jerry Yester carried on, releasing several charting singles and the album “Revelation/Revolution before moving on to their own projects in 1969.

After the Spoonful stopped touring, Joe Butler landed Broadway leads in “Hair,” “Mahogany,” and “Soon,” collecting raves. Joe appeared in a half- dozen feature films, including “Born to Win” with George Segal and “One Trick Pony” with Paul Simon. He also composed music for many commercials.

Since the Spoonful reunited in 1991, Joe Butler has stepped out from behind the drums as lead singer, performing the classic hits, new Spoonful material and his own new songs.

Joe lives with his wife Kim in Greenwich Village, and is the proud father of actress Yancy Butler, star of TV series “Mann and Machine” and “South Beach” and films “Hard Target” and “Drop Zone.”

Yancy’s first major role was in the television series Mann & Machine in 1992, in which she played an android police officer partnered with a human detective. The series was set in Los Angeles in the near future. The series was co-created by Dick Wolf, of Law & Order fame. A year later, she starred in her second series, South Beach also for Dick Wolf, in which she played a con artist and thief who made a deal with the federal government: in exchange for their wiping of her criminal record, she performs certain tasks for them.

While Butler’s first appearance was a small role as a small girl in a 1979 slasher film Savage Weekend, her next film appearance was the starring role in John Woo’s 1993 film, Hard Target, featuring Jean-Claude Van Damme. She then starred in the 1994 film Drop Zone, featuring Wesley Snipes. In 1995, she starred as Corinne the dancer in the film Let It Be Me. Butler was cast as a series regular in the television series Brooklyn South playing Anne-Marie Kersey, a Brooklyn policewoman, which ran for a full season in 1997–1998.

Yancy starred in the made-for-television film Witchblade (2000) and the subsequent television series, based on an adaptation from the comic book (also titled Witchblade), which ran for two seasons on the Turner Network Television network (TNT) for a total of 23 episodes. The series has a “cult television” following, and was ranked seventh in the Top 10 Basic Cable Dramas for 2002 (Multi-channel News, February 24, 2003).

Dwarfcraft Devices

My passion is telling stories through music. I grew up a few miles from the white sandy beaches of southern California, so in-between boogie board surfing, I marched in a band with my clarinet, starred in school musicals, sang in the choir, and performed in a cover band.

Unfortunately, when it came time to pay back those college loans, and deliver a rent check, I found myself leaving the true love of my life: music, to pursuing a career in the corporate world. After years of long hours (and I mean long), weekends, holidays, late nights; I found few rewards, and a lot of glass ceilings.

After watching a family member battle cancer and frustrated with what I had compromised, I turned back to my true passion and took a deep look at what drives me, what fulfills my soul. I took a leap of faith, and bet on myself. Scary? For sure! But, today, I have written 3 albums, (Contradictions, Turning Point, The Blond Side), completed a 19 State tour, found an outstanding band, created a publishing company, and am the only indie artist who has charted 5 songs on a single album!

I began this adventure to create music that will make you cry, smile, dance in the kitchen and think about life a little differently.

For me, my music is an image of me and those who have touched me; musical stories that others can find themselves in.

There are so many great stories left to write, left to be told.

Marc Platt

Talented guitarist, prolific songwriter, and down-to earth human being. These are just a few terms to describe Marc Platt, a Los Angeles-based, singer-songwriter who is making a difference in the lives of other musicians.

Platt’s experience in the music business goes back to the early 80s, first as an artist and then as an employee of Rhino Records, back when the record label was in its infant stages. By the mid 80s, Platt had returned to performing full-time and formed the band, The Real Impossibles. Their 1986 EP, “Play Loud” was produced by Plimsouls’ (“Million Miles Away”) front-man, Peter Case and The Real Impossibles video, “Turn My World” was featured on MTV that same year.

“When I was starting out in the 80s, I was a huge fan of the Plimsouls,” Platt said. “I hung out with Peter Case who took me under his wings and introduced me to people such as Elvis Costello, Peter Buck (REM), John Hiatt, Bonnie Raitt, Steve Earle, and T-Bone Burnett. “I really got an education watching these amazing artists work. I was a very lucky guy for getting to hang out with my idols at an impressionable age.”

Platt went on to play in a few bands, but his real success has been in songwriting. He wrote songs for Universal’s 1993 A Taste for Killing and 1994 The Raffle in which two of the songs were featured on the soundtrack. His music has also been featured on ESPN.

“I got lucky enough to get some songs in movies in the 90s,” said Platt. “They weren’t hit movies, but I found that getting to the producers was much more beneficial than music supervisors. I still make money off cable and DVDs from those projects.”

More recently, Platt’s songs have been featured on TV shows such as Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, E-News True Hollywood, and Passions. He continues to write music for a variety of TV shows.

Melissa Cox

A national touring artist, veteran songwriter, guitarist, mandolin player, and classically trained vocalist, Melissa Cox pushes the boundaries of folk, Celtic and acoustic music. Not an artist who is easily categorized, Cox strives to fuse her diverse musical tastes and influences into a style all her own. From Celtic Fusion to Trip Folk, World to acoustic electronic, modern rock to classical choir, Melissa Cox is an old soul with a new sound.

A mezzo-soprano whose voice is often compared to those of Grace Slick, Sinead O’Connor and Dolores O’Riordan (the Cranberries), the vocal power is matched only by her tenacity and determination to make it as an independent artist. And that resolve has paid off with national and regional songwriting awards, opening spots for artists like the Spin Doctors, Sister Hazel, Smash Mouth, and Three Dog Night, and headlining performances at scores of festivals across the U.S.

Since her early days as a shy girl singing Jewel covers at open mics in Delaware, Melissa has blossomed into a respected rock artist, who cites Tori Amos, Porcupine Tree, Bjork, and Massive Attack as influences. The lead singer of the national touring Celtic Fusion band Mythica, Melissa has fused her rock influences with Irish and Scottish music, a sound that has won the group headlining spots at some of the largest Celtic festivals in the nation.

Melissa’s new concept album “Harmonious Maladies” is the singers third solo album, and her sixth album when counting her releases with Mythica. The concept of the album, Melissa explains, is juxtapositions and diametric ideas…”a musical manifestation of my slightly bi-polar life.” The 11-track album, produced by Melissa, was released November 18, 2011, and funded entirely with fan support through Kickstarter.

Her most experimental and honest to date, “Harmonious Maladies” deals with a variety of issues across the emotional spectrum, including depression, psychotherapy, addiction, alcoholism, and gun control, balanced by jubilant tunes about love, travel, nature, and the Divine.

One song on the album pays homage to one of Cox’s heroes, actress and author Carrie Fisher. “I read Carries Postcards from the Edge when I was a teenager, and it really stuck with me. Tori Allah is a psychic medium, clairvoyant, clairsentient and clairaudient. She can remember seeing relatives that have crossed over as young as 5 or 6 years of age. Her mother also had this gift. Tori was warned by her mother that if she saw anything, just don’t say anything. This resulted in becoming a quiet child in elementary school, but found her niche in high school. Currently, her mediumship abilities have helped deliver messages of hope and comfort from those in the spirit world to those here.

Tori is also a feng shui intuitive. She uses the “Black Hat Sect” feng shui method for feng shui and includes her intuitive abilities to “cleanse” businesses and homes. She has been hired by Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines and featured as their “special interest lecturer” to lecture on “feng shui” and has been asked by the Orient Lines and Princess Cruise Line to lecture as well.

Tori is on T.V. She was one of the psychics featured on Lifetime’s “America’s Psychic Challenge.”  Tori has also done readings on “live” internet radio with Daze Lickenhoff, as well as on “I Am Healthy” internet radio. Tori was interviewed by Spiritman Joseph Tittel on his weekly radio show.

Tori is also a certified California teacher. Her background as an elementary school teacher and a teacher for junior college as well has provided students with insights about their potential abilities.

Tori teaches a “Spiritual Development” class in Anaheim, California for the past five years. All are welcome as she channels the lecture weekly and students return to receive channeled information. She is featured in Expos throughout L.A. and has workshops such as “Soul Communication” or “Ridding Yourself of Spiritual Blocks” throughout Orange County and L.A. Tori is also hired for private “medium parties” or parties that hire her strictly for “private readings.”

Kelly’s Lot was formed by singer Kelly Zirbes after years of songwriting and playing solo. Their 3 live CDs, “Live at The Troubadour”, “Stop And Make A Difference” and “Trio” have shown the band has what it takes “LIVE” They have headlined local southern California festivals, toured regionally and went on 2 national tours. Kelly’s Lot has been featured on many media outlets including ABC Perspectives, Channel 4 in Milwaukee, Rock City News, LA times, Pasadena Weekly, Independent Songwriter Magazine, Mixdown Magazine, The Debra Duncan Show, Good Morning Texas, The Gordon Keith show and Fox TV Houston. Many USA radio stations, traditional, college and internet have played their CDs. Normandie Wilson

Normandie Wilson is an odd bird: a visual and a vocal artist with a mix of modern and vintage influences; a five-foot tall tattooed pixie with a decidedly feminine streak; and a big heart and hurricane-force energy when it comes to helping birds. Ms. Wilson is engaging on a 2 week tour of the Rocky Mountains and West Coast in January, supported by Lincoln, Nebraska’s 50′s jazz/folk/pop duo The Golden Hour.

A steady childhood diet of Burt Bacharach, The Beach Boys, and Motown has given Normandie’s music a distinctly 60’s pop throw-back, and her songs showcase these influences with style. Normandie was an accompanist for many years, playing classic show tunes by the likes of Cole Porter and Kander & Ebb, and these jazzy rhythms and lyrics have made their way into her work as well.

The playful Wilson has been busy since releasing her first EP in 2007, Glitter Patter, an early collection of songs written during her time living in New York. Later that year, after a rough emotional time, she produced and recorded Healing Arts for Broken Hearts. Later, these two quirky records were re-released online as Early Birds: Songs from 2007. True to her DIY roots, Wilson packed her VW bug and toured the US solo in late 2008. Wilson has continued her participation with San Diego mariachi-indie-pop collective Red Pony Clock, and appeared on the records God Made Dirt (2007) and Whatevz Forevzzz (2011).

In 2009, Wilson released a joint record with fellow songwriter Sebastian Clark, Music for Smart People. This school-of-pop inspired collection features reflective and brooding lyrics, with Wilson and Clark’s charming harmonies evoking early Carole King and Brill Building-style pop. The two toured the US and Europe to support the record, which heavily influenced Wilson’s songwriting, and decision to record parts of her fourth album, The Flower Box, in Scotland and the UK.

The Flower Box was released in July 2010 and was well-received in the US, putting Normandie on the local music map in San Diego. She toured heavily in support of it, stopping at the Nebraska Pop Festival, the San Francisco Pop Festival, and SXSW, among others. In 2011, Normandie followed up The Flower Box with a 5-song EP, Summers Are For Lovers, and a 7” record, Saturday Night Girl. She completed several extensive tours of the US and made her first solo appearance at the Athens Pop Festival in Athens, GA. Normandie was also voted one of the “Top Ten Voices of San Diego” by NBC San Diego.

Normandie is currently finishing up the recording of her fifth full-length studio album, Geography And Other Problems, to be released in March 2012.

Normandie Wilson continues to make her own path as a singer, composer, painter, and woman. She will be touring the United States, France, United Kingdom, Germany, and Sweden in support of Geography And Other Problems in 2012.

Gary Terrence Becks

G.T.  Becks was born in the Washington DC metropolitan area June 18, 1968.  He became interested in writing and music at the age of 6,  and after a few years of collecting comic books became inspired to draw his own. Mostly a self taught artist, his style is a mix of both Japanese Manga and American comic influences.

In 1992 he moved to Los Angeles and completed his first comic series called Vixen 6 which was adapted into a screenplay.

In 2001 he started the series Mazscara, a webcomic whose story elements mix horror, drama and fantasy. At the same time he began to discover 3D software such as  zBrush, Cinema 4D and Poser, which took his art in a whole different direction. G.T is currently working on several 3D projects as well as two new comic series called the Humorville Hillarrions and Fiendy.

Lak (which stands for Life and Knowledge) is a brilliant, versatile lyricist devoted to staking his claim on hip-hop and taking it to new and exciting levels. Born in New Brunswick, New Jersey, he began rhyming in the fourth grade. Growing up in the center of hip-hop’s golden era of the 1980s, when true lyricism dominated the airways, Lak was inspired by the legends of that era – Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, LL Cool J, KRS-One and EPMD to name a few. After listening to Lak flow, it’s easy to assess that he is the new version of an old school hip-hop tradition. He captures the heart of what hip-hop was built upon – realism and passion.

A true entertainer, Lak is known for his stage show that hypnotizes audiences with intense rhymes, ill metaphors and a rousing delivery. He was an on-air personality at Rutgers University’s WRSU-FM 88.7 where he was the host of the popular “Led-Lak Show.” He has performed in countless shows and rap battles and has appeared on numerous underground mixtapes. Lak has also been featured as a guest on several radio and television programs including CBS Radio and BET. He earned a B.A. from Rutgers University.

Once upon a time there was a young cloud named Jose. He decided to share some thoughts in musical form. He asked Carina, who could sing beautifully to help make the songs sound pretty. She did, and it was good. But then one day Jose thought, it needs more. It needs a pair of hands to give the songs a classy feel. So they both went to their friend Pam’s house and asked if she would like to join in on the fun. She said yes but only if her family of piano’s could join. They couldn’t say no. So Jose wrote songs, carina sang the pretty parts and pam and her toy piano’s sang the classy parts. They moved to Long Beach, Ca and met two humans named Al and Jasin. The three young clouds asked them if they could add some solid rhythm to their thoughts and melodies. Al and Jasin both said yes and turned themselves into clouds. Now they all float along making music and share thoughts about what they see along the way. Fortunately for them, modern day technology has allowed them to record their songs and will be shared with anyone who is looking to listen.  With everything in place, their journey will be similar to a poem by Diamond Dave Whitaker. “Cast a wide net, find a common thread. Let life flourish. Don’t panic, just keep it organic.”

Jenkins and Thomas Neighbors founded the company and offer more than 40 years combined experience in event design and planning and prop production.The founders take a hands-on approach in working with their clients, and hold executive positions in the current structure of the company. Bravo’s full and part-time staff consists of artisans, craftsmen, technical, logistical and support personnel.

Gregory P. Jenkins holds an impressive list of credentials and has a well-earned reputation in the field of special events and marketing. As co-founder and partner of Bravo Productions, Jenkins is involved in all aspects of the company’s event productions — from designing the concept and staging the function to overseeing publicity, marketing, and the administrative operation. In addition, he supervises the company’s charitable contribution campaign.

Prior to forming Bravo Productions in 1987, Jenkins served as public relations director for Festival Artists, where he supervised Tournament of Roses Parade publicity, special events, community relations and promotions for the company and its clients.

Previously, Jenkins served as account executive/client services coordinator with the Fontayne Group, a Los Angeles-based public relations firm. Prior to moving west, Jenkins served four years as marketing research manager for the Metrtopolitan Detroit Convention & Visitor Bureau..

Jenkins holds a master’s degree in organizational communications and a bachelor’s degree in advertising, both from Michigan State University. He has also completed training in public disputes and negotiations at MIT/Harvard, and coursework in sports marketing, fundraising, special event planning, and entertainment publicity and public relations.

A Long Beach resident, Jenkins is an accredited member of the Public Relations Society of America. He also holds a membership in Meeting Professionals International and the International Special Events Society (ISES), and was a former board member of the ISES, Los Angeles Chapter. Jenkins has lectured on a variety of event-industry related topics and has written numerous articles that have been published in special events, meeting planning, public relations and marketing trade journals. Jenkins serves on the editorial advisory board of Event Solutions Magazine.

Thomas Neighbors, Co-founder and partner, directs the company’s operations, supervises the Art Department, oversees prop production, and implements programs to support the organization’s long-term growth. A noted Southern California artist and designer, Neighbors is also responsible for creating miniature models, scenery, theatrical sets and event illustrations for the commercial production, trade show, film and special event industries.

Prior to co-founding Bravo Productions, Neighbors served as art director and general manager for Festival Artists, one of the largest Tournament of Roses Parade Float manufacturers. Neighbors managed the company’s Art and Construction Departments, designed artwork for promotional merchandise, and assisted in designing parade entries for the company’s clients, including Bank of America, American Honda, and Arco.

Previously, Neighbors served for ten years as art director for Fiesta Floats in Temple City, California. Under his direction, the company’s Rose Parade entries received numerous awards for originality, creativity, craftsmanship, and artistic merit. Formerly, Neighbors was a technical illustrator for McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Company in Long Beach.

A lifelong resident of Long Beach, California, Neighbors majored in art and design at California State University, Long Beach, and Long Beach City College. He has furthered his studies in drafting, and illustrations at the renowned Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, and is also an architectural enthusiast.

Neighbors is a member of the Themed Entertainment Association. In collaboration with Coburn Topiary, Neighbors has designed and produced displays for Disneyland, Disney World, The San Diego Zoo, and theme parks and attractions throughout the United States.

Alam Khan

Join us as we get to know Alam, his rich heritage, and all of the wonderful things he’s doing in introducing a very traditional form of music into the repertoire of musicians of a variety of genres. Son of the legendary Sarode Maestro Ali Akbar Khan, Alam Khan has been touching the hearts of audiences worldwide for the past 15 years. Since his initial training into the Maihar Seni Gharana at the age of seven, Alam was blessed to learn and live in the traditional style of Guru and student. Ali Akbar Khan’s careful crafting and guidance shows in each note as well as in Alam’s imaginative way of expressing the ancient ragas passed down from the courts of Emperor Akbar by Mian Tansen in the 16th century.

Alam’s performance career was introduced to the world when he began accompanying his father onstage, internationally, from 1996 to 2006. They played in such prestigious venues as the Royal Jodhpur Palace, the Dover Lane Music Festival in Calcutta, and New York’s Lincoln Center Jazz festival, as well as highly acclaimed concerts all over the United States, Canada, Europe and India.

Along with accompanying his esteemed father, Alam’s inner voice began to emerge and grow with his solo career, which began in 1998. He has toured worldwide and established himself as Ali Akbar Khan’s true heir and the face of a new generation of Sarode players, attracting praise and attention from musical icons such as Sitar Legend Ravi Shankar, Carlos Santana, Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead, Slide Guitarist Derek Trucks, Ustad Vilayat Khan, Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, Pandit Buddhadev Dasgupta, and many more of India’s finest musicians. Alam has had the privilege and honor of performing alongside some of India’s greatest Tabla masters–such as Swapan Chaudhuri, Zakir Hussain and Anindo Chatterjee–in a constantly growing list of highly reputed venues, including the Dover Lane Music Festival, Saptak, Zakir Hussain’s annual Barsi concert (in honor of Ustad Allarakha), the Darbar Festival, the San Francisco World Music Festival, the Chicago World Music Festival and the Carnegie Group in NYC.

Alam has also collaborated and performed with a wide array of artists from different genres such as Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, Bob Weir, Rob Wasserman, Christopher Hedge, Homayoun Sakhi, underground Hip-Hop legend Eligh and electronic musicians Amplive and Janaka Selekta.

Alam was recently in the film “Play Like a Lion” that tells the amazing story of his musical journey as well as his father’s. It is now circulating amongst 2011-2012 film festival circuits internationally.

Alam was the personal assistant to his father during his final years of life, helping aid him in teaching at the Ali Akbar College of Music in San Rafael, California–a mecca for students and lovers of Indian classical music. Alam Khan, following his father’s wishes, is now the teacher of advanced instrumental and vocal classes at the Ali Akbar College of Music and has dedicated his life to preserving, performing and teaching this music to the world.
