DDA Heather Brown

On Wednesday January 19, 2011 at 8pm PST we are happy to welcome DDA Heather Brown of the Orange Count District Attorney’s office as our guest on Swoop’s World Radio. Unfortunately we all have heard news accounts and read stories of children that have become victims of sexual predators. DDA Brown has spent a great deal of her career doggedly prosecuting sexual predators and is a sought out expert regarding such crimes. Tune in for this very important show and learn what steps everyone can take to protect our children from predators.

DDA Brown has been a prosecutor in Orange County, California for the past 12 years. After having received her Undergraduate Degree in Psychology from Loyola Marymount University, she attended Pepperdine University Law School and obtained her Doctorate Degree in Law. During Law School, she worked for the Los Angeles County Probation Department in their Narcotics Testing Unit and she clerked for Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for 3 years.

Prosecutor Brown has worked in the sexual assault unit for the past 6 and ½ years and has convicted 100”s of child molesters, rapists, and sexual deviants. She has handled many high profile cases involving priests, schoolteachers, coaches, bus drivers, babysitters and parents.

She is currently assigned a caseload that specializes in handling cases involving multiple victims and the rape and sodomy of very young children. She has made presentations to local law enforcement agencies, CAST, UC Irvine, Community Service Programs and has lectured on Sex and the Law on numerous occasions at Cal State Fullerton.

DDA Brown has made presentations to the FBI on topics of “How to Make Sex Cases Better” and presented a case study on the serial killer Randy Kraft at the FBI Highway Serial Killer Symposium in 2009. She recently presented a Case Study at the 2010 Crimes Against Children Conference in Dallas about a serial molester who kidnapped and raped a 7-year-old girl as well as multiple disabled children. Her career has been dedicated to the prevention and eradication of sexual crimes against children.

He’s competed in Triathlon (Ironman Qualifier), Kayaking 2005 Yukon River Quest, (470 mile Kayak race Winner and Course Record), Dragonboat (set World record in 2007 in Sydney). Chris is a graduate of Harvard University, earning his BA in Government.

Jack Nunn

Jack Nunn, Owner of Powerhouse Fitness, started rowing in ‘96 for Long Beach Juniors and made the 1997 Junior National Team Selection Camp. He stared for four years at UC Berkeley, winning four Pac-10 championships and three IRA National Championships. He was a member of the first undefeated Pac-10 and IRA National Champion Freshman 8 in ‘98 and repeated the feat in ‘99. Jack helped his varsity 8 place second at the Henley Royal Regatta in 1999 in the Ladies Plate Challenge Cup in London, England. Jack also played two seasons with the Cal Ice Hockey Team. Jack earned his BA in Business/Communications.

Our bi-weekly LB Food Review segment featuring Chris Livingston and Taylor Nelson follows Steve. We will get the latest on good eats in the LBC and find out what’s in the works for LB Food Review in 2011.

Steve Soest is a musician, songwriter, luthier and vintage guitar connoisseur. He is an accomplished guitar technician with over 30 years of experience in the repair, modification, restoration, and construction of both vintage and new guitars. Soest works closely with Fender Guitars So Cal Service Center and is a consultant with Fenders Custom Shop and Artist Endorsement Programs. Steve has a distinguished client list including many of the worlds greatest guitarists: Brian Setzer, David Hidalgo, Dave Mason, Van Halen, The Rolling Stones, and Stevie Ray Vaughn. When not in the repair shop, you can catch Steve playing gigs around the LA/OC area with the band Superlark.

Steve’s musical career began in the 7th grade, when he played guitar with his best friend, Larry Hanson (long time guitarist for the country super group “Alabama”). Steve toured with “Sweetwater” and “Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band during his college years. Since then, Steve’s musical talents have been in high demand. He has played bass, guitar, and keyboards with Dick Dale, Chuck Berry, Eddie and the Showmen, Kid Ramos, Teisco Del Rey, The Bel-Airs, The James Harmon Band, James Intveld, and members of the world famous Ventures, he has also played in Sideswipe and in the original surf band The Torquays. Today Steve can frequently be seen playing with Superlark or Michelle Mangione.

We’re sure you’ll enjoy hearing from the only man that many of your favorite musicians will allow work on their guitar. You’ll also hear about the young boy in Japan that has taken one of the songs from one of Steve’s bands from back in the day and made it a YouTube sensation.

Eddie Cohn

There’s something to be said about living in the shadows of a famous family member, not least of which is an internal pressure to live up to the family name. Eddie Cohn’s uncle, Marc Cohn (“Walking in Memphis“) has enjoyed a solid and successful career in music. Is that in the cards for Cohn the younger as well?

While Eddie shared a passion for music at an early age much like his uncle, the similarities between the two clearly end there. Eddie’s musical influences range from Radiohead, Nirvana and Jeff Buckley to the African chanting of Amadou and Mariam. Clearly Eddie walks to the beat of his own drum.

At the age of 12, Eddie was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disease that causes chronic inflammation of the joints. Things like that – chronic illness, catastrophic events – make their mark on your soul, bringing a unique darkness that never fully dissipates. It’s from this place that Eddie writes, waiting for his muse, not forcing the creative process. When the songs are ready, he sits back and follows their lead.

Robin Keeble

This week our guest is Robin Keeble. Swoop met Robin last year and found Robin to have one of the most remarkable life stories of overcoming a life that some may have witnessed and written off as worthless; A life that many have lived and written themselves off as worthless. Not Robin, she persevered.

Robin was a drug addict who prostituted herself or committed burglaries for money to buy heroin. Her habit kept her in and out of jail for 22 years.

In 1996 she was released from prison and homeless. She was in La Palma Park in Anaheim, sharing needles with other homeless junkies when an AIDS Outreach Project worker approached her and asked if she was hungry and if she had a safe place to sleep. He offered her a free HIV test, food vouchers and help getting into a drug rehabilitation program.

Since that time Robin has become sober, earned her Associate’s Degree in 2002, followed by a Bachelors Degree in Human Services in 2005 and Master’s in Public Health from Cal State Fullerton in 2008. Along the way she’s received recognition, awards and garnered the admiration of the faculty of various institutions.

Robin is the director of the AKA Angels; A women’s civic group that meets quarterly in support of women that have been released from incarceration. The goal of the AKA Angels is to offer support during transition and community integration. She is also involved with Community Advisory Representatives; a peer based mentoring group for those incarcerated in the Orange County Jail system.

This doesn’t begin to tell the wonderful story of Robin Keeble, the road she’s traveled and the work she does. Tune in and learn more about this beautiful soul who says “…If you believe you deserve a better life, you can make it happen.”

The Yokoji-Zen Mountain Center retreat is located on 160 acres of pristine wilderness in the local San Jacinto Mountains.  The center is off-grid, operating primarily on solar energy and wind generators. Yokoji plans to establish a city center in the Long Beach area that will function harmoniously together with its current mountain retreat center.

Wayu has received Denkai (Precept Holder) Transmission from Tenshin Roshi.  And Tenshin Roshi received his dharma transmission from Taizan Maezumi Roshi–one of the early Japanese teachers to bring Zen to the West in the 60′s.  Denkai is the first step towards becoming an official Zen teacher, or sensei.  Wayu is also a certified teacher of Chanoyu (Japanese Tea Ceremony) from the Uresenke School, Kyoto, Japan.

Talk show hosts Swoop Lewis and Peter Dopulos announced the partnership with Taylor Nelson and Chris Livingston, saying that the first LB Food Review spot on Swoop’s World will launch Wednesday, March 31.

“It just seems like the perfect mix,” said Swoop host of the show. “We were already looking to incorporate a lifestyle focus to our show. Taylor and Chris are already out there doing something really cool in the community.”

Co-host Peter agreed, adding, “When we met the guys I knew we would do something together, we are all out there trying to do the same thing—spread the word about Long Beach—and we all had this good vibe going on.”

The addition of the LB Food Review segment will fit right in with the already wide range of topics Swoop’s World tackles weekly. Past shows have included interviews with political candidates and community leaders, artists, musicians, and others.

When asked about the new partnership, Chris said, “It’s just a natural fit. Swoop’s World and LB Food Review both aim to spread the word and support the local businesses of the city of Long Beach.  I’m amazed we didn’t run into each other sooner.”

“We are very excited to bring our focus on Long Beach’s food culture to the Swoop’s World listeners,” Taylor stated. “The art and live music scene of Long Beach is so intertwined with the bars and restaurants of the city that we feel we have a lot to contribute.”
