Rooster Ra

Rooster Ra is the Oxnard, CA based trio of Scott Hughes on upright bass/vocals, Ray Waggoner on guitar/vocals and Robert Rachelli on drums/percussion. It’s jazzy instrumentation, but what courses through their combined musicality brings to mind “old, weird America.” It’s a musical style that persists and is inhabited by the likes of Bob Dylan, the Grateful Dead, and Tom Waits, as well as filmmakers such as Jim Jarmush, Quentin Tarantino and the Coen brothers. There is something vaguely Appalachian – particularly in the duo’s swooning, keening harmonies – albeit filtered through Oxnard, sung from a ditch. ~ Mark McDermott, music journalist
